What Vehicle Do You Need To Tow A Mobile Sauna In Ireland? (Complete Buyer's Guide)

If you're planning to buy a mobile sauna, whether for business, events, cold water therapy or a beach location, one of the most important questions is not about the stove, timber or insulationโ€ฆ

It's what vehicle can legally and safely tow it.

We get asked this every week at Irish Sauna Company, and it's one of the biggest causes of problems for new sauna owners. Many customers assume that because a jeep can pull a horsebox, it can pull a sauna, but mobile saunas behave very differently on the road.

This guide explains:

  • Typical mobile sauna weights
  • Irish licence requirements (B / BE / C1E)
  • What vans and jeeps actually work best
  • Why stability matters more than horsepower
  • How to avoid insurance and legal issues

Typical Mobile Sauna Weights

A professionally built insulated mobile sauna is far heavier than most people expect because of:

  • Timber frame construction
  • Double cladding (internal + external)
  • Rockwool insulation
  • Stove and stone mass
  • Benches and glazing
  • Commercial trailer chassis

Our Typical Models

  • Approx. Ready to tow: 2,300 โ€“ 2,500 kg

Irish Towing Licence Rules (Very Important)

Before choosing a vehicle, you must know what you are legally allowed to tow.

Category B Licence

You can tow:

  • Trailer up to 750 kg
    OR
  • Combined vehicle + trailer up to 3,500 kg

This means most mobile saunas are NOT legal on a standard car licence.

Category BE Licence

You can tow:

  • Trailer up to 3,500 kg

This covers nearly all commercial mobile saunas and is the licence most sauna business owners use.

Category C1E / CE Licence

Required when:

  • Trailer exceeds 3,500 kg plated weight

This moves into truck category and dramatically limits who can operate or hire your sauna.

Why We Design Around 3,500 kg

In the sauna industry across Ireland, UK and Scandinavia, the most successful commercial units are deliberately engineered under the 3,500 kg limit.

Why?

  • Most customers hold a BE licence
  • Easier insurance approval
  • Councils accept them for public locations
  • Event companies can tow them
  • Higher resale value

Once a sauna requires a truck licence, your potential customer base reduces significantly.

Best Vehicles For Towing A 6โ€“8 Person Sauna (2.5 Tonnes)

Contrary to popular belief, vans tow saunas better than jeeps.

This is because a sauna is tall and catches wind like a sail. Stability matters more than engine power.

Recommended Vehicle Types

Large Commercial Vans

  • Long wheelbase provides stability
  • Better braking control
  • Designed for towing weight regularly

Examples include long wheelbase panel vans rated for 3,000โ€“3,500 kg towing capacity.

4x4 Jeeps & Pickups

  • Suitable for beaches and rural locations
  • Must be rated to 3,500 kg towing capacity
  • Shorter wheelbase can feel less stable in crosswinds

Best Vehicles For Towing A 10โ€“12 Person Sauna (3.5 Tonnes)

This is the upper limit for BE licence towing.

At this size the vehicle must:

  • Be rated for 3,500 kg towing
  • Have strong braking assistance
  • Have sufficient wheelbase for stability

We generally recommend heavy duty vans or 7โ€‘tonne class chassis cabs for frequent commercial use.

The Biggest Mistake New Sauna Owners Make

They choose a vehicle based on:

  • Engine size
  • Marketing tow rating

Instead of:

  • Wheelbase length
  • Trailer balance
  • Nose weight
  • Wind stability

A properly balanced sauna should feel calm at 80โ€“90 km/h. If towing feels stressful, the problem is usually weight distribution, not vehicle power.

What To Check Before Buying A Sauna

Before purchasing any mobile sauna you should confirm:

  1. Plated trailer weight
  2. Nose weight (usually 75โ€“120 kg ideal)
  3. Axle rating
  4. Brake type (must be braked trailer)
  5. Licence required
  6. Insurance acceptance

We help customers with all of this before delivery.
