What Driving Licence Do You Need to Tow a Mobile Sauna in Ireland?
The licence required depends on the weight classifications of the particular vehicle and trailer combination. According to current RSA guidance, a Category B licence can cover a Category B vehicle towing:
- a trailer with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 750 kg; or
- in certain circumstances, a trailer exceeding 750 kg where the combined maximum authorised mass of the vehicle and trailer does not exceed 3,500 kg.
The RSA also provides for Code 96 in certain vehicle-and-trailer combinations with a combined maximum authorised mass not exceeding 4,250 kg.
A Category BE licence can cover a Category B drawing vehicle combined with a trailer whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 3,500 kg, subject to the applicable vehicle and combination limits. Different licence categories and requirements can apply to heavier combinations.
Because licence entitlement depends on the exact combination involved, do not use the passenger capacity of a sauna or its approximate unloaded weight to determine which licence you need. Check your individual licence entitlement against current RSA guidance before towing.
Is 3,500 kg an Important Figure for Mobile Sauna Trailers?
Yes, but it needs to be understood correctly. The RSA classifies trailers with a maximum mass above 750 kg but not exceeding 3,500 kg as O2 light trailers. Trailers exceeding 3,500 kg move into heavier trailer categories and different requirements may apply.
That makes the trailer's specified weight classification an important consideration when designing or purchasing a mobile sauna. However, keeping a trailer within a particular weight category does not by itself establish that a particular person or vehicle can tow it. The driver's licence entitlement, towing vehicle specification, trailer specification and overall combination still need to be considered.

There is no single vehicle type that is automatically suitable for every mobile sauna. Depending on the sauna specification, operators may consider:
