Have Saunas Become the New Pub? Why Ireland Is Sweating, Chatting & Connecting Again

For generations, the beating heart of Irish social life was the pub, a warm snug, a creamy pint, and a chat with whoever wandered through the door.

But today, another gathering place is rising from the steam.

Across beaches, lakesides, harbor towns and even farming villages, a new Irish ritual is taking hold: saunas are becoming the modern meeting spot.

And not quietly, they're booked out, beloved, and becoming as culturally Irish as a seaside dip on Christmas morning.

So why are so many of us swapping bar stools for hot benches and cold plunges?

Let's dive in.

1. Ireland's Wellness Wave Has Arrived

While the pub culture isn't going anywhere, Ireland is experiencing a serious wellness awakening.
Sea-swimming, cold plunging, breathwork and outdoor saunas have exploded in popularity, especially since the pandemic reset our priorities.

People want:

• time away from screens

• warmth and relaxation

• outdoor wellness experiences

• community without alcohol

And the sauna brings many of those elements together — heat, atmosphere and human connection.

As The Journal recently noted, saunas have “exploded in popularity around Ireland,” becoming a mainstream wellness habit.

2. We're Looking for Real Connection Again

Technology connects us, yet we've never been more disconnected.

In a sauna, there are no phones, no screens, no TV in the corner.

Just bodies, breath, heat and presence.

Conversation happens naturally, from light banter to deep life stories.

It's the pub's original function… just sober, sweaty and surprisingly soulful.

People miss genuine community, and the sauna is filling that emotional gap beautifully.

3. Ireland Has a Heat-House History

Believe it or not, sauna culture isn't a foreign import it's a revival.

Ireland once had sweathouses (“teach allais”), small stone steam huts used up to the early 1900s for health and ritual.
Neighbours would gather, sweat, talk, and heal together.

So when we sit shoulder-to-shoulder in a sauna today, we aren't copying Scandinavia — we're returning to our roots.

4. Sea + Sauna = Pure Irish Magic

Let's be real the Irish coastline is one of the most powerful and dramatic landscapes in the world.

Pair icy Atlantic dips with wood-fired saunas overlooking the waves, and it's spiritual.

It's no wonder coastal towns are seeing mobile saunas pop up faster than coffee vans did in the 90s.

We're an island people and the sea calls us. Saunas just give us the warmth we need to stay out a little longer.

5. It's the Pub Vibe — Without the Hangover

In a sauna, like a pub, you'll find:

• laughter

• storytelling

• shared rituals

• strangers becoming friends

Except now, instead of a pint and a packet of crisps, it's steam, ice baths and herbal tea.

You leave having shared a very different kind of social experience, without counting units or booking a taxi home.

The pub gave Ireland a place to bond. Today, sauna culture is giving us a different social alternative, not a replacement, but an evolution.

So… Has the Sauna Replaced the Pub?

Not entirely.....The pub will always be a beloved part of Irish identity.

But right now, the sauna is becoming:

• the new conversation space

• the new after-work wind-down

• the new Sunday ritual

• the new community hub

Ireland hasn't stopped connecting — we've just changed where we do it and how it feels.

Warmth, water, nature, and new friends? It's a social future we can all raise a glass or a stainless-steel water bottle to.
