Barrel Sauna vs Box-Style Sauna: What's the Difference?
The most obvious difference is the shape.
A traditional barrel sauna uses curved timber walls that form both the walls and roof of the structure. A box-style sauna uses vertical walls with a separate roof and ceiling structure.
That seemingly simple difference affects how the internal space can be designed.
For us, one of the biggest advantages of framed box-style construction is the freedom it gives us to consider bench height, ceiling height, insulation, ventilation and usable internal space together — rather than designing around the curvature of a barrel.
Heat, Bench Height and Sauna Design
Hot air naturally rises, so the relationship between the heater, benches and ceiling plays an important role in how a sauna feels.
In any sauna — barrel or otherwise — good design should aim to position bathers appropriately within the warmer part of the room while maintaining suitable ventilation and comfortable seating.
The curved profile of a barrel can limit where benches can be positioned, particularly in smaller-diameter models.
With vertical walls and an appropriately designed ceiling height, a box-style sauna gives us greater flexibility to incorporate higher and multi-level benching. For commercial projects, where different people will use the sauna throughout the day, that flexibility can be particularly valuable.
More Usable Space Inside the Sauna
A barrel sauna can be an efficient solution where compact dimensions are the priority. However, curved walls inevitably affect usable space around the sides of the sauna.
A rectangular internal layout allows us to make greater use of the available footprint for seating, access and circulation — and can allow for two-tier or multi-level bench configurations.
That's especially important when we're designing larger commercial saunas or mobile saunas, where capacity and comfortable movement inside the sauna need to be considered from the outset.
Designing an Outdoor Sauna for the Irish Climate
Ireland presents its own challenges for any outdoor structure: wind, rain, humidity and frequent changes in temperature.
Rather than relying solely on the external timber shell, our construction approach allows us to incorporate separate layers for structure, insulation, vapour management and external weather protection.
It's one of the reasons we manufacture our saunas here in Ireland rather than simply importing a standard design developed for another market.
What About Mobile Barrel Saunas?
Barrel saunas mounted on trailers have become a familiar sight in the mobile sauna market. Our approach is different.
Rather than building a sauna and subsequently placing it onto a trailer, our mobile models are developed with the sauna and trailer configuration considered as part of the overall design — meaning dimensions, weight distribution, internal layout, access, equipment positioning and intended commercial use are all considered during the design process.
For somebody planning to establish a mobile sauna business in Ireland, those practical considerations can be every bit as important as the appearance of the sauna itself.
Are Barrel Saunas Bad?
No.
A well-designed barrel sauna can provide an enjoyable sauna experience, and for some buyers its compact footprint and traditional appearance will be exactly what they're looking for.
Our decision to manufacture box-style saunas isn't about claiming that every barrel sauna is inferior. It's about what we want to achieve with the saunas we build.

Those details will tell you considerably more about a sauna than whether its exterior is round or rectangular.
